I have to adjust this review because there is more current information. It appears the engine problems were most likely caused by the dealer when the motor was mounted on the boat and rigged.

That was done by the boat manufacturer's dealership... who is not an authorized Honda dealer. (I initially intended to purchase the boat without an engine because the boat dealer only sold Mercury motors. I wanted a Honda...

When I explained that, the dealer said he could get a Honda for me. No Problem!). So the engine was acquired by him from somewhere and installed by his (Mercury) shop. It ran poorly from the moment I first fired it up.

I eventually took it to a Honda authorized repair shop. They had trouble finding the problem. It took over a month and the changing of some perfectly good parts before they finally found the issue and declared the problem was caused by bad gas... which they claimed I got in Canada.

That is not correct as the motor ran poorly before I went to Canada. But the determination of "bad gas" could be correct and could have come from the dealer set up. But "bad gas" from whatever source was a big red flag for me. Honda could have reasonably claimed that they have no control over what gas is put into the motor and therefore, under these circumatances, they have no obligations under the warrantee.

But they did not do that. They paid for everything. And they subsequently responded positively to my concerns about stresses that this initial problem might have put on the future health of the motor. They said that if something went wrong even after the warrantee expired that they would keep this incident in mind.

They have been both helpful and responsive. The problems have been with their local authorized service operation... which was ineffective. And the boat dealer who supplied and installed the engine.

But the biggest problem was my mistake in agreeing to purchase a new Honda engine from a boat dealer who was not an authorized Honda dealer. That was a bad idea for several reasons... Anyway, my view of Honda Marine has changed since my initial upset. At this point the engine is fixed and running well...

at no cost to me. Looking back, I think most, if not all, of this could have been avoided had I made the engine purchase as planned..

from an authorized Honda dealer... Lesson well learned.

I have a new Honda 60 hp that ran poorly from the very beginning. I gave it a few hours to run-in to see if it would smooth out.

But it never did. And when the run-in schedule let me run it up to full RPM it would drop off RPM before getting there. Anyway it just wasn't right. But it would run and I had a planned trip to fish in Canada so I had to take it up there or cancel the trip.

I went. At high altitude lakes the engine was worse, but it did continued to run. When I returned I took it into the Honda dealer. After a month and numerous part changes they could not fix it.

Then suddenly they said the found the problem... It was the Canadian gas!!! But, I said, the problem existed before I went to Canada... And besides, didn't they check the fuel first when I took it in?

There is no engine shop in the country that wouldn't check fuel first if they are presented with a rough running engine... Anyway, they want me to pay for it to be drained of gas and filters replaced... Apparently, the engine problem is my fault for putting foreign gas in it!.... I have yet to see how it will preform after their flushing...

I doubt it will be different because it was bad before I went to Canada. In this process Honda has never communicated with me despite my numerous attempts (emails and calls). The entire process has been terrible....

From a defective product to uninterested and ineffective service. I will not ever purchase a Honda again....

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Preferred solution: Let the company propose a solution.

Honda Marine Pros: Honda outboards until i purchased one.
